Steyning Police Station is a large listed building on a substantial plot of land immediately adjacent to the Conservation Area very much in the centre of the town, and next to the Memorial Playing Field.
Sussex Police no longer need such a large building and the Parish Council are anxious to acquire the building for community use. To this end Horsham District Council have designated it as a Community Asset. This means the Council has the sole right to purchase the asset for six months at market price from the time the building comes on the market. Your Committee believes Steyning Society should support the acquisition, and use it for NHS Care in the Community providing short term care for people ready to leave hospital, but cannot do so because there would be no one at their home to look after them. Their unnecessary further stay in hospital is known as ‘bed blocking’, using up valuable beds, It is estimated perhaps 20% of hospital beds are occupied in this way.
Phil Bowell our Council Chairman and our District and County Councillors are working hard to support the Project. Two Trusts in the town have possible funds and we hope our members support your committee in the search for this much needed facility.
